Program WinRAR obsługuje własny format RAR oraz najbardziej popularny ZIP, a także nie w pełni (tzn. jedynie rozpakowuje) CAB, ARJ, LZH, ACE, TAR, GZip, UUE, ISO, BZIP2, Z oraz 7-Zip, konwertuje do formatu TGZ, umożliwia tworzenie samorozpakowujących się archiwów, dzielenie archiwów na odrębne woluminy, szyfrowanie i zabezpieczanie hasłem.

Wyspecjalizowane i oryginalne algorytmy kompresowania plików tekstowych, graficznych i muzycznych są jedną z najbardziej podkreślanych cech WinRARa. Osobom stawiającym pierwsze kroki z kompresowaniem plików z pewnością przypadnie do gustu wbudowany kreator pozwalający dotrzeć do podstawowych opcji programu (procedura prostych pytań i odpowiedzi). Ponadto niewątpliwym atutem WinRARa jest obsługa olbrzymich archiwów plików, co przydaje się w przypadku gigantycznych zasobów do kompresji.

Nowy format RAR5 oferuje w edycji 64-bit większy rozmiar słownika kompresującego dane do 1 GB, natomiast wersja 32-bit umożliwia korzystanie z słownika 256 MB. Obie wersje pozwalają na rozpakowywanie archiwów stworzonych przy pomocy słownika 1 GB. Domyślny rozmiar słownika dla formatu RAR5 został ustawiony na 32 MB, a to przekłada się na lepszą kompresję danych niż w poprzednich wersjach aplikacji (RAR 4.x 4 MB). Oczywiście drugą stroną medalu jest mniejsza prędkość tworzenia takiego archiwum.

RAR5 poza mniejszymi plikami końcowymi wykorzystuje również możliwości wielordzeniowych procesorów podczas wypakowywania plików, oferuje silniejsze algorytmy szyfrowania danych (zamiana AES-128 na AES-256 w trybie CBC), pozwala na weryfikację hasła dostępu bez konieczności rozpakowywania całego archiwum czy wykorzystania 256 bit hasha BLAKE2sp. Ponadto sporo zmian pojawiło się w mechanizmie zabezpieczającego przed uszkodzeniem archiwów i zwiększono limit opisu ścieżki dla archiwów RAR i ZIP do 2048 znaków.

WinRAR 5 to nie tylko nowości. Producent pozbawił programu kilku funkcji, które uznał za zbyteczne. Wśród nich znalazła się m. in. funkcja weryfikacji autentyczności plików czy możliwość komentowania plików wewnątrz archiwów.

Co nowego w WinRAR 5.10:

1. Dodano wsparcie dla ekstrakcji archiwów ZIP i Zipx korzystających z zompresji BZIP2, LZMA i PPMd.
2. Dodano wsparcie dla ekstrakcji podzielonych archiwów 7z (.7z.001, .7z.002, …).
3. Dodano wsparcie dla instrukcji CPU AES-NI pozwalających poprawić szyfrowanie RAR i wydajność deszyfrowania.
4. Domyślnie zdjęcia tematyczne są przeskalowane w lepszej jakości wyświetlania w trybie wysokiej DPI.
5. Zmienne środowiskowe, takie jak temp%, mogą być stosowane w polu „Files to add” dialogu archiwizacji.
6. Przełącznik -ai może być używany podczas tworzenia archiwum RAR. Tak ustalone wartości, typowe dla plików i folderów, są przechowywane zamiast aktualnych atrybutów. Wcześniej ten przełącznik, mógł być używany tylko w przypadku ekstrakcji.
